There are so many talented musicians in Vancouver and we wanted to highlight as many of them as we can! We went to a shoe store and tried on fancy shoes will chatting with Nonarchy.
1: Describe your sound for those who haven’t heard you?
Nonarchy's sound exists at the intersection of singer-songwriter, pop, punk, and indie rock (it's a four-way stop!). The lyrics are hyper-personal and almost folky, while the melodies are catchy and upbeat, and the instrumentation is loud and electric, with rhythms to get your head bobbing and blood pumping. If you like the sounds of Julia Jacklin, Belle and Sebastian, or The Weakerthans, you should definitely catch a Nonarchy show!
2: One of your memories of being in the Vancouver music scene?
About a week after our first ever live show, we went to see a backyard concert as a band. There were tons of people there, but Sasha Balazic (Tractor Beam, Strüds Monroe) sought us out in the crowd to meet us and ask us to open for Tractor Beam at Redgate a few months after that. I remember being so thrilled and feeling so special! Our relationship with Sasha is definitely one of our most important as a band, even still. Now he's helping us record some upcoming releases we're very much looking forward to sharing!
3: Who is one of your favourite local bands?
So many amazing ones! But to name one, I know we've all really enjoyed seeing Garden Mice play, and all of the music they have out there on Spotify is phenomenal. We first saw Martin play as Squib, so to see him absolutely shred was such a pleasant surprise and getting to see them is just such a treat. Martin clearly has vision as a songwriter, and they blend genres so well! We're definitely fans. Check 'em out! They put out an album recently and, top to bottom, I found it to be fantastic.
4: Whats coming up for you?
We're playing November 23rd at The Lido with Glamb! No cover, doors at 8pm. We also hope to be releasing a single in the new year—when you get back from winter break and don't know what to do with yourself? Yeah, we wanna be there for you then with something new and exciting! And perhaps a Christmas surprise...TBD.
5: Where can people find you? What are your social media links?
People can find us all over the internet! We have Spotify, Bandcamp, Youtube, Apple Music, all the good stuff. And you can find info about us as well as links to all of our other digital offerings on our website, nonarchytheband.com
