Car Free Day - Highlights

Updated: Sep 24

For the past two weekends, Support the Scene has hosted two separate stages for Car Free Day Main Street & Car Free Day Commercial Drive, organized and lead by the incredible Jade Weeks of Support the Scene. We wanted to thank all of the artists and musicians who came out to play, as well as the incredible crowd we had both weekends, and the volunteers that made Car Free Day a reality!

Two beautiful weekends, back to back, on streets filled with Vancouverites enjoying the last of festival season, with incredible music and a great vibe; what more could we have asked for?

Many people approached our booth, complimenting the incredible musicians who played on stage, and asking the big question; "Whose playing that incredible song right now?"

Today, we're answering that question, connecting you with all of the best ways to find these artists, and even providing a little personal feedback from yours truly!

Car Free Day - Commercial Drive

Artist: Zach Brannon

Anyone who had the pleasure of listening in to Zach Brannon's set knows just how incredible of an instrumentalist he is! With an electric guitar at his fingertips, he was able to charm the entire street and every passer-by with a beautifully melodic chord progression, one that people couldn't help but stop to listen in to. His music stood out for the lack of vocalist, as his rhythm and beats took you on a wild adventure that was immeasurable and beyond compare.

If you're interested in finding out more about Zach Brannon, head on over to his website, or check out his Spotify to listen to more incredible tracks! Zach also has an upcoming show that you should definitely check out!

Artist: Vultures at Dawn

Now there's a unique band! Standing at the booth, numerous people approached me to say; "Is that an OBOE in a metal band?!" I must have heard those words at least half a dozen times. With several original songs at their disposal, Vultures at Dawn caused numerous heads to turn; many people who wouldn't normally stop for a metal band, were impressed enough to approach me at the booth to let me know just how great they thought they were! A classical sound entwined with top-shelf metal made for an incredible performance, and an impressed crowd.

If you're interested in finding out more about Vultures at Dawn, check them out on Instagram! They also have an upcoming show that you should check out!

Artist: Ophelia Falling

These guys were fun, to say the least. The band had an incredible energy in front of the crowd, one that made you think they were born to be there. The lead vocalist belted out strong lyrics with an opera-esque style while the band played with the finesse of those who love the craft; a delicious combination that created an incredible melodic metal that drew an energetic crowd. Possibly the most impressive part was their ability to stay positive and pumped up, despite the hot afternoon sun.

If you're interested in learning more about Ophelia Falling, head on over here, or check out their Spotify to listen to some of their tunes! They also have a show coming up, so check it out!

Performance: Drag Showcase!

The crowd that was drawn in by the drag showcase was delightful, positive, and filled with excited families who were beyond happy to dance and sing along as they watched the fantastic performance. Support the Scene wants to give a special thank you to all of the Drag Performers who came out! Car Free Day - Main Street

Artist: The Time We Died

With catchy riffs right from the start, a toe tapping and head bobbing beat, The Time We Died stole the hearts of numerous people walking by. What started with a handful of people nodding along, quickly became a large crowd of all ages, grooving along to the unique riffs reverberating into the street. Several people wandered to our booth to let us know just how great they thought they were, all while being unable to tear their eyes away from the show being performed. People could even be spotted watching the show from their apartments in the building next to us!

To learn more about The Time We Died, check them out here. These guys are also one of the competitors at this years annual "Best in Vancouver" battle of the bands styled showcase! We'll be featuring them later this week on our blog. If you're interested in checking them out at Best in Vancouver, head on over to the LiveActs page to find out more information on where you can see them.

Artist: Never Plenty

These guys had probably one of my favorite sounds over both weekends, with psychedelic and almost sci-fi-like elements throughout the set, a wicked stage presence that made everyone look twice, and some great original tunes. It's possible that they were the most asked about group of the two weekends, as numerous people approached the booth after the show to ask our favourite question, "Who are they?" Everywhere we looked throughout this set, people were bobbing their heads and dancing along, and every time we turned our head, the crowd just got bigger.

To check out more about Never Plenty, head on over to their Linktree, or check out there music on Spotify!

Artist: Cursed Words

The kind of energy that Cursed Words brings to their shows always reminds me of the vibe you get in a punk bar, with the band giving their everything as they play and belt their lyrics out to a bouncing, riled up crowd. On Sunday, Cursed Words delivered a top tier rendition of this type of show, the passion they show for their craft being evident in every listeners ears, and even being reflected by the crowd bouncing and dancing in front of them. I absolutely love seeing them play, and feeling the energy they bring to the crowd and stage, and this weekends show was no exception!

If you want to check out more about Cursed Words, head on over to their Instagram page, or head over to Spotify to listen to more!

Performance: Drag Showcase!

Just like the weekend prior, the crowd that was drawn in by the drag showcase was amazing, filled with excited, positive, and friendly faces and families, all dancing and singing along as they watched the performers, entranced by the outfits, makeup, sparkles and performances! Support the Scene wants to give a special thank you to all of the Drag Performers who came out! Artist: Guyliner

A band that speaks to the generational trauma that every millennial/angsty teen has endured, Guyliner was a nostalgic blast from the past, and so much fun to sing along too. Covering all of our favorite emo hits from the mid-2000's, Guyliner made me want to break out the skinny jeans and the heavy black eyeliner, with covers of some of the best emo hits like Mr Brightside, Ocean Avenue, The Middle, and so many more. This band speaks to the emo girl inside me, and she definitely tossed those emo bangs across her face multiple times throughout that show.

To learn more about Guyliner, head on over here! Guyliner also has another show coming up in the near future, so check it out!
