Music BC is putting on a music extravaganza! We hung out with Mar Emanuel to chat about the event coming THIS SATURDAY!
1: Describe your sound for those who haven’t heard you?
Lots of people describe my music as "sad-boy" but I would say that I'm in the Alt-RnB space. Lots of influence from Frank Ocean, Daniel Caesar and Leven Kali. Big fan of intimate choruses, vocal stacks and bass solos. 2: What separates you from other artists around Vancouver?
I've found that artists from Vancouver have this very west-coast indie sound. While there are remnants of that in my music as well, I pull a lot of influence from modern rap and RnB and combine that with the sounds of the city. Producing and writing all my own stuff means that I have a lot of control of exactly what my ears want to put down on a record. If there's someone in the city who sounds like me, I haven't heard them. 3: Who is one of your favourite local bands?
I grew up admiring local acts like Dan Mangan, We Are the City, and Said the Whale. These days, I have lots of friends in the city who are making amazing things. Bungalow is a band that kills - they're a rhythm section who have backed up tons of acts in Vancouver and are now making their own music. Super technical and fun funk/soul/jazz. 4: Whats coming up for you? A bunch of single releases coming up this year that I'm really excited for. I think I've found a sound that works for me and am stoked to combine it with visual elements as well as live performance throughout the year. I think fans of me will be impressed with how far I've come.
5: Where can people find you? What are your social media links?
You can find me on instagram @mar_e.mp3 and on all streaming platforms as Mar Emanuel.
